Buying College Books

I have a son going off to college for the first time and had heard in the past about places to buy college textbooks for less. Is this true?  If so, where?

Thanks,

Mindy

You can try http://www.abebooks.com but you have to be careful about the edition of the book, which is frequently not mentioned in the sales lines. The values are dirt cheap and conditions are as-stated. Also, e-follette books has some ‘rent-a-book’ programs at some of the larger campuses that they service. My daughter is also going away to college now and I’m in the same boat as you!

Amazon.com has a large selection of used books and, I think, rentals. Many of the college book stores have used books and buy back gently used books at the end of the semester.

  • Whatever you do, DO NOT buy textbooks from the bookstore unless you have to, that’s just silly. My advise is to go to http://www.gettextbooks.com and search out the books by ISBN. International edition books can offer substantial savings but may not have the same end of chapter questions as the normal editions.

For anyone that would like to save even more money, just photocopy the entire textbook from a friend in class. It may seem like a funny idea, but $15 and 45 minutes later, you’ve saved a bundle above the normal cost of a used textbook from the bookstore ($100).

Good luck, you can find me on twitter if you have any other questions.
